On Friday, July 12, during the Opening Ceremonies of the 2024 NC State 4-H Horse Show, the show was officially dedicated to Mary and Scott Dickerson.

Mary and Scott Dickerson of Chatham County have been 4-H volunteers since 2007 when they introduced their daughters to the program to meet kids with similar interests and a love of horses. Shortly thereafter, Mary Dickerson founded her 4-H club, the Chatham County Horsekateers, to allow dozens of kids to love and enjoy all that 4-H offers.

What started as a small 4-H club has since become Mary’s passion project. The Horsekateers have excelled in horse shows and educational competitions. As a result, Mary has volunteered to coach National and World teams in both hippology and horse bowl while mentoring participants from across the state. Mary has found her life’s work in 4-H; advocating annually for 4-H funding with our national and state senators in Washington DC, and going out of her way to assist anyone interested in getting involved.

Scott Dickerson also began participating in 4-H for his children but has continued to support the NC 4-H program behind the scenes. When he first started volunteering with the 4-H educational contests, Scott recognized the cumbersome method of tabulating results and dedicated many hours to developing custom software to score contests quickly and accurately. You may have also seen Scott at 4-H horse shows, even when his kids weren’t showing, spending hours ringside to cheer on every rider to complete a jump course or flat pattern. Even with his kids aged out of the program, Scott volunteers to tabulate educational contests whenever needed and remains involved in the NC 4-H program.

The Dickersons have dedicated themselves to 4-H, and have shaped the NC 4-H Horse Program as it is today. Congratulations, Mary and Scott, and thank you both for your tireless support of the 4-H youth around you. Your club, educational teams, and the state program are honored to dedicate the 2024 State NC 4-H Horse Show to you.
