The 2024 NC State 4-H Hippology contest was held on March 9, 2024, on the NCSU Campus. A total of 182 contestants competed in the Senior, Junior, Junior Rookie, Senior Rookie, and Cloverbud divisions. 4-H’ers completed exams, slide identification items, stations, judging classes, and team problems. The North Central District 4-H Horse Council and The Dale Earnhardt Foundation sponsored the contest.
Nash County 4-H’ers took home the high-scoring individual awards in the Junior Rookie and Senior Rookie divisions. Piper Davis won Junior Rookie and Carson McIntyre won Senior Rookie. Wanda Bunn coached both 4-H’ers.
Junior Division individual awards were separated into 8-10-year-old and 11-13-year-old age categories. Ayla Hahn from Cabarrus County was the high-scoring 8-10- year-old. Kristen Kaus coached Ayla. Cumberland County 4-H’er Audrey Taylor captured the top score in the 11-13 year old category. Audrey’s coach was Claudia McCauley.
Rutherford County’s junior team captured the champion team title. Team members were Emma Horton, Avery Hudson, Demi Terry, and Sophee Malone. Rutherford County 4-H Agent Cynthia Robbins coached the team.
Graham Zeiders, from Chatham County, was named the Horseman of the Year for being the high-scoring Senior Hippology Individual. Reserve Horseman of the Year honors went to Union County 4-H’er Lillian Sproles. Graham was coached by Ruth Vorder Bruegge and Mary Dickerson and Angela Kaus was Lillian’s coach.
Chatham County repeated as Senior Team Problem and Senior Team Overall Champions. Graham Zeiders, Makenah Allred, Hannah Oberman, and Sydney McDermott comprised the team coached by Mary Dickerson and Ruth Vorder-Bruegge.
