Union County Activity Day will be on April 18th, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. in the Union County Agricultural Center. All youth must be enrolled and approved in 4-H Online to be eligible for County Activity Day. All topics are due to the County office by April 1st via registration on 4-H Online!
Whether this is your first time participating or you have presented before, feel free to take advantage of our Presentation Workshop on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at 10 a.m. at the Union County Agricultural Center. Please RSVP on 4-H Online.
What is County Activity Day?
County Activity Day is a 4-H Presentation public speaking competition for youth to present information on a topic of their choice. 4-H presentations are pivotal for North Carolina 4-H, as they develop youths’ communication and leadership skills. County Activity Day focuses on participants teaching others what they know about a topic of their choice. County Activity Day creates a supportive and structured environment for youth to engage with their peers while working on their public speaking skills.
Common Definitions in Activity Day
- Demonstration: Doing, showing how, making- has a finished product to show- shows how a task is done or a product is made
- Illustrated Talk: Talking, telling how, using charts, pictures, models, sharing information with the help of pictures, videos, charts, models, etc
- Formal Speech: Shares information on a specific topic without using any visuals, props, or materials.
Benefits in Participating
County Activity Days have numerous benefits for 4-H’ers that extend beyond the competition. Engaging in 4-H presentations is an excellent way for youth to acquire essential life skills. This experience not only works on youth’s public speaking abilities but also boosts confidence. By choosing and presenting on a subject matter, participants not only deepen their knowledge but can also help create their interest in others. 4-H presentations give youth skills that are invaluable in various parts of their life, from effective communication in personal and professional settings to contributing to their clubs, community, country, and world.

Presentation Rules and Regulations
Age Divisions: 8-10, 11-13, &14-18

- Age eligibility is established on January 1, 2024.
- The same presentation may be repeated one year to the next (with one exception). However, the individual’s personal development will be greater if the presentation is revised or improved.
- The following time requirements are expected for all general presentation categories: a minimum of 5 minutes and a maximum of 12 minutes. Exceptions are as follows: Public Speaking (5-7 minutes); All Horse Categories (See #4); Chicken Barbecue (2 hours), Turkey Barbecue (2 hours); Pork Cookery (2 hours); Beef Char-Grill (2 hours). Turning baskets or cooking baskets are not permitted during Chicken and Turkey BBQ.
- Horse Category Time Requirements: Horse, Individual 8-10, 11-13: 4-12 minutes; Horse, Individual 14-18: 9-12 minutes; Horse, Team 8-10, 11-13: 5-15 minutes; Horse, Team 14-18: 10-15 minutes; Horse Public Speaking 8-10, 11-13: 4-10 minutes; Horse Public Speaking, 14-18: 8-10 minutes.
- Horticulture Science, Fruit & Vegetable, Egg Chef Challenge (Egg Cookery), and Peanut Foods categories must be a “demonstration”.
- A team comprises two individuals except in 4-H Entertains, which has no limit. If team members are not in the same age division, they must compete in the older division.
