During the Friday evening program of the 2026 NC State 4-H Horse Show, the Youth and Adult Candace Norman Volunteer Awards were presented. These awards are sponsored by the North Central District 4-H Horse Advisory Council in memory of longtime NC 4-H Horse Program and Orange County volunteer Candace Norman. They are given annually to a 4-H youth member and an adult volunteer who exhibit true dedication to and embody all the characteristics and morals of 4-H- well-rounded people who strive to make the community a better place through example and leadership.

ADULT WINNER- Ruth Vorder Bruegge

Ruth is a former NC 4-H Horse Program participant who has continued to stay involved, investing in the next generation through volunteering. She has devoted countless hours to coaching the Chatham County Horsekateers and has helped guide youth to success at state, regional, and national competitions in Hippology, Horse Bowl, Judging, and Communications. At times, she coached multiple teams simultaneously, investing an incredible amount of time and effort to ensure that young people are prepared not only to compete, but also to learn, grow, and gain confidence. She is a consistent volunteer at the State Horse Judging Contest, serves as an Executive member of the North Central District 4-H Horse Council, and generously volunteers her time as a judge for 4-H horse shows at no cost.

Ruth has helped shape the lives of countless youth by teaching responsibility, sportsmanship, leadership, teamwork, and perseverance. Her influence can be seen not only in the accomplishments of the students she coaches, but in the confidence and character they carry with them long after their 4-H years have ended.

Ruth Vorder-Bruegge embodies the spirit of service, leadership, and mentorship that this award was created to recognize.

She leads by example, motivating others through her positive attitude, strong work ethic, and willingness to take initiative. Whether organizing events, mentoring younger students, or serving in leadership positions, Lily approaches every responsibility with maturity and dedication. Lily has devoted countless hours to helping others through activities such as donating various items to different organizations, leading food collections, and creating cards for service members.
