The 2025 Candace Norman Youth and Adult Service Awards were presented during the opening ceremonies of the NC State 4-H Horse Show on July 11.
Sponsored by the North Central District, these awards honor the memory of Candace Norman, a long-time volunteer for both the NC 4-H Horse Program and Orange County. They are given annually to a 4-H youth member and adult volunteer who demonstrate true dedication to the morals and characteristics of 4-H. These awards recognize a well-rounded person who strives to make their community a better place through their example and leadership.
YOUTH WINNER
Union County 4-H’er Blake Garber was the recipient of the youth volunteer award. Blake is a dedicated Union County 4-H'er whose commitment to community service and youth mentorship has left a strong and lasting impact. Blake embodies the spirit of hands to larger service. He has contributed to numerous 4-H community service projects over the years-both through his individual efforts and as part of his 4-H clubs: His club, Young Riders, has organized animal shelter donation drives and supported hurricane relief efforts. Blake actively participated in these efforts, as well as volunteer efforts in his other club, teen council. He also assists with the Union County Cloverbud program. He helps lead activities, engages the youth in positive ways, and ensures that every child feels seen and included. His natural ability to mentor and his willingness to serve across age groups truly stand out. From animal welfare projects to hurricane relief, from summer camps to youth development programming, Blake is the kind of young person who shows up-consistently and wholeheartedly. He volunteers not for recognition, but because he truly believes in helping others and building a stronger community.
