The North Carolina 4-H Horse Program hosted its first-ever virtual Horsebowl Challenge on March 13, 2021. Ninety-nine youth representing twenty-six counties competed in four different divisions: Junior, Junior Rookie, Senior, and Senior Rookie. Rookie contestants had never previously competed in a Horsebowl Competition. Each contestant competed in three rounds of play.
The event was made possible due to the generous support of the following donors:
Emerald Event Sponsor: North Central District 4-H Horse Program c/o Morgan Maness, 525 NC 65 Suite 200, Reidsville, NC 27320
Silver Awards Sponsor: Mr. William Crouse, 6458 Bethel Church Road, Gibsonville, NC 27249.
The All-Around High Point County Awards recognized counties that had youth participate in multiple divisions. For each of the four divisions, youth earned points for their county based on their ranking (for example, first placed individuals earned 10 points.) If a county had more than one individual place in a division, only the highest individual score counted. Wake and Nash county tied for first place with 16 points and the tie was broken on the highest score earned in the third round. Wake county won the tiebreaker for first, and Nash took second. Union county placed third with 15 points, and Halifax and Avery were fourth and fifth, respectively.
The high-scoring Senior Rookie individual was Molly Shell from Avery county. Ella Weaver from Forsyth captured first place in the Junior Rookie division. Saona Wilcox from Alamance county was the top-scoring junior. High individual Senior honors went to Hannah Williams from Union county. Beth Morgan from Wake County was named the National Horsebowl team coach based on having the highest collective scores of Senior competitors. The top ten Senior individuals will be invited to try-out to represent North Carolina 4-H in national contests.
